Recognising the growth of Campbelltown’s City Centre and its surrounds, we set the project up as a new northern; Queen Street Gateway. The opportunity to create new place would support and complement the existing facilities within the Campbelltown City Centre, as well as adding a new high-density, place-based living and working precinct with highly programmed open spaces.
This project was a successful collaboration between the client, Aland and Loci Design Collective as Lead Landscape Architect. We delivered a comprehensive and creative public domain and place activation strategy, engaging in the NSW Design Review Panel process and documenting Development Application plan sets for submission.
The complex nature of the site's redevelopment required a complete staging renewal. This involved designating restricted-access areas for underground excavation, while ensuring other areas remained accessible to the public for sales and access to the information centre. As a result, a comprehensive design and programming approach was necessary to successfully deliver the project.
A Ribbon of Experience
The Ribbon of Experience intends to deliver a smoother, safe flow of movement for pedestrians during the early construction stages. Using the Ribbon as a metaphor for connection, spaces were designed along it to tell a story, and provide legibility for people as they move through the site.
The Ribbon winds past building entries into the central public domain zone, where the major public facilities offer play, recreation and eating venues. In this central space, a major structural feature, the Beacon has been located to help users orientate to the site.
The Beacon
The Beacon is designed as a bold public space feature—a large light well that connects directly to the underground parking, and at night time luminates. It will guide visitors and residents to the heart of the site. With its striking form and bright colors, kind of like a lighthouse, the Beacon will become a landmark for the community, visible from all around and helping people find their way.
